UFCU Helped Me Start Over
When I was in high school, I worked at the University of Texas Medical Branch (UTMB) as a part of neighborhood youth program for lower-income neighborhoods. After graduating, I got into the US Navy and went to Vietnam. When I came back to Galveston in 1981, I had to start over. It was one of the hardest times in my life.
I returned to UTMB and became a campus policeman to get back on my feet. I went to work faithfully and wanted to establish myself financially. I had heard about credit unions and tried to join one, but I couldn’t because I didn’t have credit.
Then, I came into UFCU one day. I talked to the manager, Jill, and told her that the other credit union hadn’t given me a membership because I didn’t have credit. At the time, I wanted to buy a used car for my wife and me. Jill helped me become a UFCU Member and get an auto loan.
Since then, UFCU has taken care of my family and me through a lot. After Hurricane Ike, UFCU gave me a few months’ break from car payments while we were recovering. Now that I’m retired, I watch my four grandchildren so my kids can go back to school and have a better life than I did. I’m still raising two girls, and I brought one of them to UFCU when she needed to purchase a car.
I’ve been so happy with everything here at UFCU, I used to cook BBQ for everybody at my local branch every year. The people at UFCU are such huge assets, and I have nothing but admiration for them. These are some good folks.
