UFCU Deepens Its Commitment to UT with First Campus Location
Eighty years ago – 1936 – many of the traditions and landmarks that Texas Longhorns take for granted had not yet been birthed. The imposing tower that today is the centerpiece of UT-Austin’s sprawling campus was not yet a part of the landscape. It would be another year before the tower that generations of students have passed in route to classes every semester would be completed. Nor would the orange lights that alumni have come to expect after major athletic and academic feats yet shine until at least another year. “The Eyes of Texas” had been adopted as the school song only a few years earlier. Anna Hiss Gymnasium was the place to swim on campus, and students had few housing options – Littlefield, Roberts, Andrews and Brackenridge Halls.
It was in this backdrop that 12 University of Texas faculty and staff members gathered in May of that year to sign the charter for a new credit union that would serve the financial needs of the higher education community of UT. With a collective deposit of $873 and its first loan to a member of $35, the original 30 members spawned what would become another University of Texas tradition, University Federal Credit Union.
Like Bevo, Hook ‘em Horns, and the Texas Fight song, UFCU has earned a spot on the university’s history rolls since that first loan 80 years ago. And this year, that connection deepened even further with the opening of UFCU’s first location on campus. Located at Gregory Gym, at 2101 Speedway, the new financial center provides UFCU members, including UT faculty, staff and students, with quick, convenient access to financial services.
"Our members' well-being is at the heart of everything we do and opening this new location is just one more way we can deliver convenience and accessibility to them," said Tony Budet, president and CEO of UFCU.
Members choose the style of service they need: whether quickly accessing cash or making a deposit through the financial kiosk and 24/7 walk-up ATM; applying for a loan at the online center; or talking to a UFCU representative on purchasing a vehicle, buying their first home, retirement, and other financial needs.
UFCU was founded on a vision to make the higher-education community stronger through shared values and high-impact relationships. As a member-owned cooperative, UFCU is passionate about improving the lives of members throughout the communities it serves. In addition to straight-shooting financial advice and customer-focused services, UFCU is a devoted supporter of causes that are important to its members and the local community. UFCU is especially proud of its support of the UFCU Disch-Falk Field, the UT Childcare Center and UT’s Neighborhood Longhorns Scholarship Program.
